Township of East Luther Grand Valley infiltration and inflow cencerns notice of public information centre
The Township of East Luther Grand Valley recently completed the activities to assess the extraneous flows to the Grand Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). These excessive flows into the sewers are not sewage but rather groundwater and surface runoff. These additional volumes of water contribute to significant operational costs at the existing sewage treatment plant and will also add to the costs of operation and will take up valuable capacity at the new plant after it is constructed. If the flow situation is not corrected, these additional costs will continue to be covered by the ratepayers of the Township. Council has therefore established the initiative to reduce sewage flows in Grand Valley as a priority, and moreover the Township is under direction from the Ministry of the Environment to reduce the magnitude of the problem.
The extraneous flow situation in Grand Valley, along with the recommended strategy and specific action plan to reduce the extent of the problem is documented in the Final Infiltration and Inflow Study Report prepared by R. J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) in July 2009. The Study Report was accepted by Council and submitted to the Ministry of the Environment. The strategy proposed includes the need to implement an action plan to correct the deficiencies on private property as these have been found to contribute a large component of these sewage volumes. The Township is seeking any input or joint solutions from Private Property owners on this issue. The information and recommendations provided in the Study Report forms the basis for the material to be presented and discussed at the proposed Public Information Centre (PIC).
The objective of the PIC is to provide property owners and residents with information on the nature of the problem and of the strategy that is under consideration to alleviate the problem.
